Introduction

You are cordially invited to attend the First National Syringomyelia Training Day, funded by The British Syringomyelia-Chiari Society, the Ann Conroy Trust being held at the B. Braun Business Centre, Sheffield on Thursday 14th June, 2012.

The British Syringomyelia-Chiari Society, The Ann Conroy Trust is a charity that supports patients with syringomyelia, Chiari and related disorders. One of its main aims is to provide education and training about these conditions for health care professionals, both across the UKand internationally. Patients and their families, who are affected by these conditions, frequently ask the Charity to make health professionals more aware about syringomyelia and its related disorders and the effects that these conditions have on people's lives.

Whilst syringomyelia remains an uncommon disease, it is now diagnosed with increasing frequency, thanks to widespread application of MR imaging. It nevertheless continues to challenge the expertise of doctors, nurses and other therapists, particularly when it comes to choosing the most appropriate form of management for the individual patient. As a health care provider attending this meeting, you will gain an understanding of just what this and its related conditions are and where they fit into the overall spectrum of neurological disease. You will learn how you, as a health worker, can better assist this group of patients. In giving you this opportunity The British Syringomyelia-Chiari Society, The Ann Conroy Trust, in turn, hopes to help its patients by ensuring that those who are called upon to treat syringomyelia have the knowledge and understanding to do so effectively.

The day is geared towards the needs and interests of neuroscience nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. It will be of value to both newly qualified staff and established practitioners, who wish either to develop their knowledge and skills in the area of clinical neurosciences or to add to their existing experience and expertise in this field.

The course provides 6.5 hours of continued professional development, excluding time taken for refreshments. The fee is a modest £19. Registration is straightforward and you can apply for a £10 travelling allowance and a subsidised hotel rate if you are travelling over 100 miles to this unique educational event.

The British Syringomyelia-Chiari Society, The Ann Conroy Trust would like to thank B Braun Medical for the use of the facilities at The B Braun Business Centre.
